Welcome to Year 1
Here at St Patrick’s, we are a Christian community where love, care and support are reflected in everything we do together. This year, we look forward to building friendships and learning together whilst having fun and growing in our faith.
“Always do what is best for you and everybody else”
(based on 1 Thessalonians 5:16 -17)
Maths: Our focus is on place value and addition and subtraction, counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s and other areas of maths, we will support the children to do this by using a variety of math resources.
Literacy: We will be focusing on poetry, recount and narrative writing in the Autumn Term. We will begin to listen and create our own stories by breaking the stories and poems down into small plot points, looking at the important features of our writing. We will remember to write in sentences using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will begin to learn to use conjunctions and adjectives to make our writing more interesting.
RE: This term, we will be learning all about Families, Belonging, Judaism and Advent. We will develop our knowledge of prayers, Catholic Social Teaching and deepen our understanding of our class saint, St Angela Merici.
History: This half term we will be investigating toys throughout time, studying the differences in materials and design between the toys of today, our grandparents’ toys and toys in Victorian times.
Science: This half term our topic is Animals including humans. The children will learn about how we can sort animals and the different parts of the human body.
Art/DT: During the first half of the Autumn term we will be designing and creating our own toys, which links to our current history topic.
What happens when?
PE is on a Wednesday. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed in their full PE kit.
Homework is given out on Friday and expected back completed by the following Thursday.
Spellings: Spelling Lists will be given to pupils each Friday. These are to be kept at home and learned a little each day. We will have a small spelling test each Friday to see how well the words are remembered. The words are part of the Year 1 Curriculum and consist of both words following a rule and common exception words plus words using the sounds children have been learning in Read Write Inc.
Reading Books: Children will take books home from our school reading scheme on Fridays. Books should be returned to be changed, by the following Thursday. We fully encourage independent or shared reading of children’s own books at home and so if your child reads anything at home themselves, please encourage them to bring the book in to school to share with others.
How can I help my child?
Reading at home – make reading fun and easy – something you both look forward to!
- Share the reading, take turns or see whether your child wants to read or be read to today
- Visit the library together and help them choose books to share
- Talk about pictures in books
- Sing songs, read poems and make up rhymes together – the funnier the better
- Be a role model. Let your child see you enjoying reading and talk about what you are enjoying
- Point out words on signs, shops and labels
- Play word games like “I Spy” and “Simon Says…”
- Use sound cards practice our RWI sounds.
Writing at home – make writing fun
- Encourage them to write shopping lists, make birthday cards, write a daily diary.
- Practice handwriting
- Use spelling shed to practice spellings.
Maths at home:
- Use games and songs to practice doubling and halving numbers, telling the time and number bonds to 10/20 to embed fundamental mathematics.
- Read books that contain numbers to encourage your child to identify the numbers seen in a story.
- Ask questions when going to the supermarket or out shopping about how much items cost and how many items you are putting in the basket/trolley.
- Watching number blocks and super movers to make maths exciting.
We look forward to a very successful year, thank you for your continued support!
