Welcome to Reception!

My name is Miss Bullen and I am going to be your class teacher in Reception. Mrs Husband is our teaching assistant – she is wonderful and is always there to help!

We have fantastic topics to study! In the Autumn term we will be looking at the topics ‘Welcome’, ‘Celebration’ and Christmas. In Spring our topics will be ‘Dinosaurs’, ‘Up the Beanstalk’ and Easter. In summer we will look at ‘Minibeasts and ‘Up, up and Away’.

Tapestry

If your child attended our Nursery they will already have a tapestry account. If your child is new to the school you will receive a permission form and will be sent an activation link. Tapestry is a secure way of recording your child’s learning and achievements. It can only be accessed by the EYFS team and yourselves. You can only view your own child’s journal. If your child is uploaded in a group setting, you can only view your child’s name, it cannot be seen by others. You can use tapestry to showcase any learning your child has achieved at home too!

Maths

In Maths we follow the White Rose maths scheme throughout the school.  Parents in the fact have told us that the White Rose App with mini-games has been a huge support to their children. We also recommend the TV show ‘Numberblocks’. Episodes can be found on Youtube. Any and all exposure to numbers and counting is fantastic!

Phonics

We follow the Read Write Inc phonics scheme.

Phonics top tips:

  • We use letter sounds not names. E.g. ‘mmm’ not ‘em’.
  • Please be careful not to add ‘uh’ to the end of sounds as this can cause confusion when reading words later on. E.g. ‘ruh’ instead of a crisp ‘rrr’.
  • When reading words, we say the sounds individually and then blend the sounds together. E.g. mmm-ah-t…mat!

Home Reading

Your child will receive a reading book and a reading log. At the    initial stages, these books are to be read together to support their love of reading. Eventually as your child’s phonics knowledge        progresses: your child will be able to sound-out these words and read with your support. See the phonics section of this hand-out for sounding out tips! You will also receive red words to practise. These are words that can’t be sounded out and need to be memorised.

P.E

On P.E day your child will need a plain white top with their school jumper or cardigan, dark joggers or shorts and sensible shoes suitable for running. Your child’s P.E day may change throughout the year due to sports coach schedules.

Homework

Homework and Home Reading will both be sent out on a Friday. You will have a nearly full week, so they both need to be returned the following Thurday ready for us to send out for the following week.

However, if you finish homework and have practised your reading a few times before then you can always send the folder in early.

The homework alternates between a maths task and a phonics/ literacy task. They follow what we are covering in school. They will never be lengthy or overly time consuming.

We look forward to a wonderful year. May Christ Be Seen in Us.
